 What we are working

Students will continue to learn the foundations of Writer's Workshop with their narrative writing as our focus. We have learned how to brainstorm, use graphic organizers to organize our thoughts and write it in a paragraph format. We have worked on self-editing and will continue to build on those skills as we work on peer edits and teacher conferences. When we work through the process students gain an understanding of what it is like to be an author. They are very excited to finish their rough drafts and create their first story to share with the class.

Students are focusing on visualizing, retelling, characters, and making connections with stories we read in class.

Students will continue to work with addition and subtraction to put together and take a part  and using number bonds.

Students will be learning about their senses this week as week dive into being a scientist and that means.

Homework begins this week.  You will find the first grade homework plan in your child's S.T.A.R. folder.   Also in your child's folder is their homework notebook.  Please complete the homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday in the notebook and return to school each day (Wednesday will be a math sheet).  Tonight will be word study.  Your child's words are found in the front pocket with the homework plan.  Then your child may choose one way to practice his/her words in his/her notebook.  The choice board is on the back of the homework plan.  There is an example on the inside cover of the notebook.  Homework should not take very long, and should allow for plenty of time to read at night, also.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

We have time for snack each and every afternoon.  Please pack a snack for your student. :-)

If you haven’t already signed up for Remind, please consider it.  It is an easy, quick way for you to get in contact with me.  You just text @srusk to 81010.  Then you can text back and forth with me about anything you may need a quick response about.  It makes life so much easier!

Welcome to First Grade!

My classroom is located in F Building, Room #4.

This year, I will be using a program called Remind to assist with communication. Remind allows me to send updates directly to your phone.  It also allows you to text me directly.  It's a great option for communication.  E-mail and phone are both options, as well, but I encourage you to give Remind a try.

To sign up, you can go to the following link:

Or, you can text @srusk to 81010.

Morton will continue to use a school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) system this year. Please review the Welcome handout I created to see the expectations.

Please be sure to review the student hand book and the Parent flip book for my class. It has valuable information to help make this year the best yet. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about any of the information provided.

Please make sure you complete and turn in the hand outs given.

Please make sure your student knows how he/she is going home each day this week. If there are any changes from what you told me, or what you filled out, please let me know in writing so that I can send it to the office.

I sent home the students' blue S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Academic Responsibility)folders today.  The first grade team uses the folders as "Go Home" folders. This folder will contain your student's agenda that will stay in the back pocket of their folder.

Homework will begin the week of September 11th. At that time, I will send their homework notebook home.

On Monday, I sent home the "Me Bag" with directions attached to it.  The students will share their "Me Bags" with the class to help us get to know each other.

Please remember to send your student in with a snack.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me through remind or email me at
