Pictures

The pictures that were sent home on Wednesday either need to be paid for, or returned.  You can pay for the pictures online (please let me know if you do, so that I can mark you off).  If you do not want the pictures, please simply send them back to school.  You are also welcome to pay for some of them, and return the rest that you do not want.  We do keep track, and need to either have them returned, paid for, or a combination of both.  Thank you for your support!

Our First Grade Field Trip to Poplar Grove in Wilmington is Wednesday, November 1st.

· We will be leaving school at 8:45am, and it is extremely important that your student arrives on time for school on Wednesday.

· If you are sending in lunch for your student, please send it in a Ziploc bag or a paper bag with items that can be thrown away/recycled.  We will put them in coolers to transport them to Poplar Grove.

· Please dress your student for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.  I will have the tie dye t-shirts ready for students to put on if they would like.

· If you are planning to drive and meet us there, please let me know (so that we know how many people we will have with us) and plan to bring the $10.68 to pay at Poplar Grove upon arrival.

This will be a fantastic Trip!

Reading Eggs/Computers:

Due to the computer virus (you should have received an all call about this) our first graders will now be logging into the computers under their own username and password.  These are the same usernames and passwords as the Reading Eggs logins that I have sent home.  It is more important now than before that we practice using these logins at home.  The class has discussed setting a goal to get everyone to login without help by December.  If you could encourage students to sign on to Reading Eggs independently, I would greatly appreciate it!

Helpful Information:

*Popcorn is on sale on Fridays for 50 cents per bag.

*Our school is collecting Box Tops - thank you for sending them in!  Our class came in third for the most box tops for October!  Thank you :-)

Have a great week and a Happy Halloween!

Week of October 16th

Dear Families,

What a Mustang Round Up!  It was amazing to see such a great turn out.  If you made it, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Coming up this week:

Monday – computer lab

Tuesday - library

Wednesday – P.E.

Thursday – Early Release (12:30pm dismissal)

Friday – Art

*Lunch 11:07 - 11:37

Looking ahead:

October 19th – Early Release

October 20th – Field Trip Permission Slips and $7.41 due

October 23rd – 27th – Red Ribbon Week

October 31st – End of Grading Period

November 1st - Field Trip to Poplar Grove

Field Trip:

First Grade will travel to Poplar Grove in Wilmington on Wednesday, November 1st.  A permission slip was sent home on last Friday, and is due back by Friday, October 20th. The cost is $7.41 and we are requesting exact change or a check (with address and phone number).  I understand it is an odd amount, but that is the exact cost from Poplar Grove.  If you would like to attend, please let me know.  The cost will be $10.68 upon arrival.

Title 1 Agreement:

A duplicate paper was sent home last week.  Please sign and return both the white and yellow paper as soon as you can.  Thank you for your support!

Pumpkins:

We will be learning about pumpkin life cycles and doing various pumpkin investigations during the week of October 23rd.  If you would be willing to donate a pumpkin for our class to use for our activities, please let me know.  I’m hoping to use about 5 pumpkins, any size.

Reading Eggs:

Reading Eggs logins are in your child’s folder.  This is a fantastic program that your child can work on at home to increase their reading skills.  The username and password can be a little tricky, though, especially because of the capital letters.  If you could help encourage your child to learn how to type their password in correctly, that would help us to be able to utilize the program more often throughout the day.  We are working on it at school, but sometimes having to press shift/caps lock can be tricky!

Relay for Life:

Morton’s Relay for Life Team has started fundraising for this year’s Relay for Life.  “Fight Cancer” decals and paracord bracelets are available for $5 in the office.  Candy Grams will go on sale for 50 cents on Wednesday.  Information will be coming home soon!

 What we are working

Students will continue to learn the foundations of Writer's Workshop with their narrative writing as our focus. We have learned how to brainstorm, use graphic organizers to organize our thoughts and write it in a paragraph format. We have worked on self-editing and will continue to build on those skills as we work on peer edits and teacher conferences. When we work through the process students gain an understanding of what it is like to be an author. They are very excited to finish their rough drafts and create their first story to share with the class.

Students are focusing on visualizing, retelling, characters, and making connections with stories we read in class.

Students will continue to work with addition and subtraction to put together and take a part  and using number bonds.

Students will be learning about their senses this week as week dive into being a scientist and that means.

Welcome

Welcome to First Grade!

My classroom is located in F Building, Room #4.

This year, I will be using a program called Remind to assist with communication. Remind allows me to send updates directly to your phone.  It also allows you to text me directly.  It's a great option for communication.  E-mail and phone are both options, as well, but I encourage you to give Remind a try.

To sign up, you can go to the following link: https://www.remind.com/join/srusk

Or, you can text @srusk to 81010.

Morton will continue to use a school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) system this year. Please review the Welcome handout I created to see the expectations.

Please be sure to review the student hand book and the Parent flip book for my class. It has valuable information to help make this year the best yet. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about any of the information provided.

Please make sure you complete and turn in the hand outs given.

Please make sure your student knows how he/she is going home each day this week. If there are any changes from what you told me, or what you filled out, please let me know in writing so that I can send it to the office.

I sent home the students' blue S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Academic Responsibility)folders today.  The first grade team uses the folders as "Go Home" folders. This folder will contain your student's agenda that will stay in the back pocket of their folder.

Homework will begin the week of September 11th. At that time, I will send their homework notebook home.

On Monday, I sent home the "Me Bag" with directions attached to it.  The students will share their "Me Bags" with the class to help us get to know each other.

Please remember to send your student in with a snack.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me through remind or email me at stacey.ruskouski@onslow.k12.nc.us
