Writing

In order to help your student prepare for the end of the year and next year, I thought I'd send out the writing expectations for the end of first grade.  These will help you work with your child at home. 

-Uses drawings to enhance meaning of writing

-Writes several sentences about a topic

-Writes in complete sentences 

-Writes in a logical sequence 

-Use list-like details and descriptive language

-Spells many high frequency words correctly

-Uses capital letters and end punctuation correctly and consistently 

 

CHEW Challenge

Information was sent home about the CHEW Challenge through the United Way of Onslow County.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this challenge.  If you would like to participate, you pledge to donate $30 or 30 canned goods in 30 days beginning May 1st and running until June 1st.  Food donations can be brought to the front office.

End of Year Conference Information

We are coming up to the end of our testing window in reading. I have created an 

online signup for end of year conferences. Please take a look at available times. 

These should be fairly quick conferences discussing the growth from the beginning to end. End of year math assessment will be given the first week of 

June so please keep that in mind when signing up for

The Book Fair

The book fair is open every day in the Media Center from 8am – 4pm now through May 5th. It will also be open during STEAM night!

STEAM Night

Join us for our Fairy Tale themed STEAM Night on Tuesday, May 2nd from 5-7pm. I can’t wait to see you all there!

Field Trip

Our on-campus Gem Mining field trip is May 10th. Permission slips and $7 are due by Friday, May 5th

Collecting for a Cause

If you would like to donate gently used books as part of our book drive, please send them in by Friday, May 5th.

A few updates…

Folders:  The rest of April and May are SUPER busy.  Please be sure to check your student’s folder each night.  There will be time sensitive information sent home about many exciting events (from shows, to STEAM night, to field day, etc.)that your student won’t want to miss. 

Donations:   Our class would greatly appreciate donations of both tissues and Ziploc bags. 

Snack:  Please be sure to send in a snack for your student each day.

Our relay for life team has met the $8,000 goal! Thank you all for your support and making this a reality! We are well over $9,000 and we are still going strong!

Your little ones are getting ready for their first grade performance! They are working hard to learn their songs in music!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend! It was nice to see some faces at skate nation on Saturday! We raised $810 for Relay for Life! We are still doing penny wars until the end of March! So far, we have $6.78 in pennies and classes from around the school have cannon balled our class with $11.20 in silver coins! ARGH! We also have sonic night on March 22nd. 10% of sales and tips from 5-8pm will be donated to Morton’s Relay for Life team and the staff will be at your service!

Writing: Students will be focusing on persuasive/opinion writing. Students will think, decide, and explain their opinion using the word because.


Week of February 27th  

Our field trip is Wednesday! Students will be attending a performance of “Monkey See, Monkey Do”, presented by MADCAP Productions from Ohio and sponsored by the Onslow Council for the Arts. The performance will be presented at Northside High School Auditorium. The entire class will be going! If you would like to join your child, you may meet us at the school. The performance will begin at 11:30. The cost is $4.00.

Progress reports will be going home. If you would like to schedule a conference please write me a note letting me know and I will let you know what dates are available if you are not able to sign up online.

Week of February 20th  

Our field trip is right around the corner! Student’s will be attending a performance of “Monkey See, Monkey Do”, presented by MADCAP Productions from Ohio and sponsored by the Onslow Council for the Arts. The performance will be presented on March 1st at Northside High School Auditorium. The cost is $5.00 for admission and transportation. Please send in the permission form along with the $5.00 by February 24th!

Week of February 13th  

I hope you had a good weekend! All of the students were so excited to pass out their Valentine’s Day cards to their friends. Thank you all for the amazing gifts! I am truly blessed to have such an amazing group of students and supportive parents!

If you have not turned in your child’s report card, please make sure it is signed before sending it in. Also, do not forget to sign up for a midyear conference by the end of February. If you are having trouble signing up online line send me a note or an email please.

Week of February 6th  

I hope you enjoyed your Super bowl weekend! What an exciting game that was! I can’t believe the 100th day is this Friday! I sent home a newsletter explaining their 100th day project and Valentine’s Day. Please be sure to look it over. Also, if you have not turned in your child’s report card, please make sure it is signed before sending it in. 

Although February is the shortest month, we have many events we will be covering. We made predictions on whether the ground hog saw his shadow. Next, we will be studying Black History Month and celebrating 100 days of school. We well be focusing many influential people this month including Thurgood Marshall, Ruby Bridges, Booker T. Washington, Benjamin Banneker and much more!

This Friday, we will have 100 themed stations. This month’s at home project is to collect, draw, or show 100 items. Please make sure that students are able to carry their project to and from school. All projects will be on display Friday for students to walk around.

Week of Jan. 25

Here is the breakdown of what we will be doing this week. 

Due to the short week, all students will work on the same Word Study list.  We will review some commonly misspelled words.

Word study words: drip, drum, drink, prong, drop, frog, fresh, from, prop, and prom

This week students will:

-Infer using picture clues and their schema

English/Language Arts: We will finish learning about habitats and how humans have impacted different habitats. 

Math: Students will continue to compose and Decompose two digit numbers

Science Describe the food chain (predators/prey and carnivore/omnivore/herbivore)

Writing: Students have begun writing an All About Penguins book. We will finish the book by next week. Then students will choose an animal to research and writing using the Penguin book as a model.
