Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the counseling department here at Morton Elementary School and the 2016/2017 school year!
I am very excited to meet and serve the students, parents/guardians and staff here at MES.
This will be my first year at Morton Elementary. I previously taught kindergarten and second grade in Florida as well as in NC before accepting the School Counselor position at another Onslow County School where I remained for 5 years.
Please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or e-mail if I can be of assistance to you in any way. Below, you will find some information about the school counseling program here at MES. Please check out the tabs above if you are in need of additional information.
The school counseling program is based on the American School Counseling Association's Nation Model. It includes a variety of components described below:
Monthly classroom guidance lessons will begin the month of September and end in May. Guidance lessons are based on student, staff and parent data, and the Onslow County Schools character education standards. The counseling department will collect data throughout the school year to assure that lessons meet the current school population's needs. Classroom lessons could include, but are not limited to, topics such as friendship, bullying, self-esteem, study habits and respect for oneself and/or others.
Small Group Counseling will start in September/October. The counseling department will offer small groups on a variety of topics (based on data) such as social skills, anger management, study skills, and friendship groups. All groups are formed based on the needs of our students. Any staff member or parent can refer a student who they feel would benefit from small group counseling. All requests MUST be in writing (see group referral form under the forms tab).
Individual Counseling in the elementary school grades is short-term. Due to the nature of the school counseling profession, individual counseling is a "check-in" process rather than a series of regular sessions. If a student is in need of additional, long-term mental health services, parents/guardians and the counselor will work together to refer the student to a professional counselor.
"Check ins" can begin at any time during the school year and last between 4-6 weeks.
Transition Assistance will be available upon request for all new students or students who are leaving MES during the school year. If you know your child's future school, please let the counseling deparment know so that the student can receive assistance in preparing for his/her upcoming transition to the new school.
Teacher Consulation and Collaboration is available every day.
Parent Consulation and Collaboration is available by appointment. Please call the school to set up an appoinment, e-mail the school counselor or fill out a contact form on my website. I return calls and e-mails during the day when possible.
Monthly Newsletter : To access the monthly newsletter, please click on the files tab, select "Counseling Department Newletter", and choose the current month.
I look forward to working together with the wonderful parents, staff and students at Morton Elementary school this year!
